![]() “Southern Gentleman,” a watercolor painting by Shania Schoonmaker, is the Best of Show winner for students in the annual Northwestern Art Society Art Show. This painting and all other winners in the campus show will be on display at Murrow’s FrameArt on Friday at 6 p.m. for the First Friday Art Walk. |
The winner’s show will take place at Murrow’s FrameArt in the Downtown Mall from 6 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
In the student area, a watercolor painting titled “Southern Gentleman” by Shania Schoonmaker, Canton freshman, captured the Best of Show honor and a $75 prize. On the employee/retiree/alumni side, a landscape photograph titled “Into the Woods” by Angelia Case, academic projects assistant/media specialist and NAS sponsor, was honored.
Taking the top votes for the People’s Choice Award and a $50 prize is student Cinthya Nevarez, Laverne sophomore, for an acrylic painting titled “Doorway to Her Heart.”
Twenty students entered 127 pieces into this year’s show, and 18 individuals in the non-student area entered 150 pieces.
“I’d like to add that 65 different pieces of artwork from 22 people in this year’s show received at least one vote in the People’s Choice category showing there was a wide variety of interest on what the viewing public liked,” Case said.
Students earned $15 for each first place entry, $5 for second and $2 for third with the Division Winners receiving $50.
A complete listing of all winners in every category is available on the NAS web page at www.nwosu.edu/nas-art-show and also may be viewed at the winner’s show downtown. A People’s Choice ribbon also will be awarded at the show on April 3.

Case was pleased with the number of entries of quilts this year and is so happy these individuals decided to share their talents with the campus community.
“We had nine quilts entered in the show this year, and they all were beautiful,” Case said. “I appreciate everyone who entered this year and came to campus to view the show. I also hope several will stop by Murrow’s FrameArt on Friday to see all of the winning pieces from our students, alumni, employees and retirees.
“And, remember, we’ll do this again next year, so I encourage everyone to get started being creative so we can see your artwork in the next show.”
Case also praised the members of NAS for their hard work this school year in preparation for the annual art show.
“NAS members work hard on fundraisers because we know we’ll need at least $800 available for prize money and $300 for ribbons, plus other costs in printing and supplies,” Case said. “I really appreciate their hard work, as well as the community’s support.”
