Dr. Richmond B. Adams, associate professor of English at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, wrote an article titled “One of Many Little Human Documents” that will be published in the spring 2015 edition of the "Convergences in Art and Science" edition of the journal, “Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture.”
“My article, in a broad sense, explores the impact of inadequate Civil War medicine on the physicians who attempted to administer care to those who were wounded during the conflict,” Adams said. “More specifically, my work discusses the ways in which the character of Dr. Mandalet in Kate Chopin's 1899 novel ‘The Awakening’ exemplifies those larger cultural issues.”
Adams said his reason for writing this article was because Chopin's novel is a canonical work read and studied by all scholars of American literature for its multi-faceted portrayal of many post-Civil War cultural controversies. Even as it does so; however, there has been little or no work on the role and place of physicians in these novels or the films eventually made that were set in the post bellum years prior to World War I.
