Freshman Class 2014

The 2014-15 school year is underway, beginning with a successful freshman/transfer orientation at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Saturday, August 16, with more than 430 students attending orientation.

Gathered in Herod Hall Auditorium, incoming freshmen experienced a tradition of Northwestern as the Ride, Rangers, Ride fight song rang out. The fight song was played by Northwestern’s Band as the Ranger Cheerleaders performed and the newly welcomed students became Northwestern Rangers.

Kaylyn Hansen, director of student life and counseling, said that approximately 327 attended Freshman Orientation, and 110 students attended Transfer Orientation.

Orientation opened in Herod Hall Auditorium where members of the Northwestern staff, Ranger Connectors and Northwestern Student Ambassadors were introduced. After introductions Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president; Calleb Mosburg dean of student affairs and enrollment management; and Arden Chaffee, Alva Mayor, spoke to students.

Each student had the opportunity to have their student IDs made, get parking decals, and visit with staff members about the differences between high school and college and what to expect from their college professors and classes. Freshmen visited with current Northwestern students to ask questions about college life. Financial aid, registry and the business office were open to assist students with final payments and questions. Freshmen students also visited the Academic Success Center and the J.R. Holder Wellness Center.

Campus clubs and organizations from throughout campus had booths set up in the Student Center Ballroom so all students were able to see many of the organizations they will have a chance to join.

“It was great to see so many incoming students,” Hansen said. “They were able to meet administrators and student services staff during orientation, which hopefully made them feel welcome and will help them succeed here at Northwestern.”

Transfer students attended their orientation session in the afternoon and were given information about receiving their Northwestern e-mail accounts, the Student Information System, transcripts, IDs and parking decals, and a short wellness center orientation, among other topics.

“We are looking forward to showing new students on campus this year all the fun activities we have planned,” Hansen said. “Student Government (SGA) invites students to become involved. Students can join SGA or one of the many clubs on campus.

“It is so important to be involved and meet new people while in college.”
