Employees at Northwestern Oklahoma State University were honored during the ninth annual Employee Service Recognition Ceremony last week. Ceremonies were held at Alva and Enid locations.
Dr. Steven Mackie, assistant professor of education, received the John Barton Distinguished Teaching and Service Award during the annual ceremony. Nominations are made by faculty, staff and students, and the recipient is determined by a selection committee.
Natalie Miller, assistant certification officer, was selected as the Thelma Crouch Staff Employee of the Year Award winner. This award was established to recognize exceptional performance and/or service by a member of the Northwestern staff. The recipient of this award shows dedication to Northwestern and its students.
Employees who were honored by their years of service are listed by name and job title below.
• Five year service recognition: Julie Barraza, international student adviser; Lisa Franz, athletic department secretary; Justin Hosey, maintenance; Cheryl Kent, instructor of nursing and interim chair; Cynthia Martindale, instructor of nursing; Kathleen O’ Halleran, instructor of political science, sociology and geography; Justin Phillips, groundskeeper; Christie Riley, instructor of education; Dana Roark, instructor of business; Ted Satterfield, instructor of mass communication; Chesnei Thomas, admissions counselor/recruiter; and Rae Wilson, assistant professor of social work and field director.
• 10 year service recognition: Mary Brune, instructor of nursing; Chauncey Durham, ITV assistant coordinator; Sharon McConkey, ITV coordinator; Shannon Morris, maintenance secretary/health and safety assistant; Darwin Proctor, assistant campus police chief; Dr. Dean Scarbrough, professor of agriculture and chair; Darcie Tidwell, maintenance; Dena Walker, instructor of mathematics; Kimberly Weast, MFA, associate professor of fine arts.
• 15 year service recognition: Jeanne Cole, Oklahoma Small Business Development Center coordinator; Dr. Sharon Hill, professor of English; and Dr. Wayne McMillin, Northwestern-Enid dean.
• 20 year service recognition: Dr. Kathy Goddard, assistant professor of education; Susan Jeffries, library services director; Kenneth Knabe Jr., HVAC technician; Sheri Lahr, registrar; Miller and Richard Vogel, HVAC lead man.
Mackie also was recognized for serving as the Conserving Our Ranger Environment (CORE) adviser and having the Greatest Community Impact for the “Big Event.” The “Big Event” is held annually and, in March, the group played host to an e-cycling drive and collected electronics for recycling.
Susan Holliday, relationship manager, received recognition for the Greatest Student Involvement award for heading up Northwestern’s Foundation and Alumni Association Thank-a-Thon. Northwestern students contacted more than 1,093 donors to personally thank them for their generosity.
Angelia Case, media and archives assistant and Northwestern Art Society sponsor, received the Most Inventive SLICE Project/Event certificate for “Bucks for Bradley.” NAS held a bake sale for Bradley Gilbert, a 2007 Northwestern graduate who lost his battle to leukemia in July. The group collected baked items to sell, took monetary donations and held a rummage sale with proceeds going to Gilbert.
Kylene Rehder, Department of Social Work chair, accepted the Distinguished Service Award for her service learning efforts within the social work program.
