A drawing and a black and white photograph earned the Best of Show awards during the 10th Annual Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) Art Show. The show continues in the J.W. Martin Library through March 30, then winners move to the Runnymede Hotel on April 5.
These Best of Show winners, along with all other winning entries will be displayed in a Winner’s Only show at the Runnymede Hotel on April 5 during the First Friday Art Walk events in downtown Alva from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
In the student area, a drawing titled “Forgotten Old Cabin” by Dakota Helvie, Helena senior, captured the Best of Show honor and a $75 prize. On the employee/retiree/alumni side, a black and white photograph titled “The Family” by Valarie Case, university relations specialist, was honored.
The People’s Choice award and a $50 prize also went to Helvie for her mixed media piece titled “Hunting Cabin.”
In the special “Celebrating the Arts” category that commemorates the show’s 10th year, Case’s photograph titled “Talent at Her Fingertips” was the first place winner. Shawna Gilbert, Enid senior, took second with a photo titled “A Child is an Artist, Too.” Third place went to Angelia Case, media and archives assistant, with a photo titled “The Process.”
Because the NWOSU Art Society was celebrating its 10th year, club members decided to give a special “Creativity Takes Courage” award based upon the one artist who showed the most creativity in their artwork in this year’s show. After a number of select individuals anonymously voted, the winner of the special award is Nice Mutshipayi, a graduate student from Kinshasa, Congo.

“If you weren’t able to make it the J.W. Martin Library while the show was up, you missed a super show, but, you have an opportunity to see the best of the best at the Runnymede,” Angelia Case, NAS sponsor, said. “I thank Dr. Ken Brown, Charla Parker and the rest of the Nescatunga Ladies for allowing us to continue to bring our winning pieces downtown to share with the general public.”
Like the campus show, guests attending the Runnymede show during the First Friday Art Walk are encouraged to vote for the artwork they like best for a “People’s Choice” award.
Following the Runnymede Winners’ Show, six pieces from the NAS Art Show have been selected by Graceful Arts Gallery staff to be displayed through the month of April in their space in downtown Alva.
Unless pieces were selected for the Graceful Arts Gallery show, all non-placing artwork should be picked up from the Media Center in the library by 5:30 p.m. on April 1. Winning pieces may be picked up at the Runnymede after 8 p.m. on April 5. All remaining artwork should be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. on April 8 from the Media Center. Artists with pieces selected to be displayed at the Graceful Arts Gallery through April should make arrangements with gallery personnel on when items need to be picked up.
