Graphic explaining economy scholarship infoAs slumping energy prices force companies to downsize their workforce, the demand for educational services among displaced workers is quickly rising.

Recognizing this fact, Northwestern Oklahoma State University is offering tuition scholarships for those employees who desire to return to the classroom.

“The recent news of significant layoffs by area companies is a real economic blow to families and communities,” Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, said. “We want these families to remain in the area. By providing these incentives, we hope to provide the college education necessary for them to find meaningful employment in other fields or to advance to other positions within the energy industry.

Northwestern will provide $1,000 tuition scholarships for up to two consecutive semesters for those who meet the criteria for admission into the University. The scholarships require enrollment in 12 credit hours per semester (spring or fall semesters).

Those who wish to immediately enroll in spring semester classes can do so until Jan. 20.

“Our staff is prepared to help new students work their way through the admission and enrollment process,” Cunningham said. “We also will assist them in applying for other types of financial aid that could provide additional assistance.”

Cunningham encouraged anyone affected by the economy to visit with admission counselors about educational options. Northwestern offers both traditional classroom and online classes in both the day and evening, and has campuses available in Alva, Enid and Woodward.

Northwestern’s main campus in Alva is located at 709 Oklahoma Blvd., and admission counselors are located in the Fine Arts Building. They also can be contacted by calling (580) 327-8546. Northwestern-Enid is located at 2929 E. Randolph and the contact number there is (580) 237-0334. The Woodward Campus is located at 2007 34th Street and the main campus number is (580) 254-2500. Additional information about the University is available at www.nwosu.edu.
