Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement played host to the second Alva Beautification Day on Thursday, Oct. 29.
Five students – Nepal freshmen Puja Shrestha, Nashreen Lohani, Sandeep Bhattarai; Hydro freshman Corey Shirey; and Edmond senior Jordan Evans – joined Service Learning Coordinator Theresa Lemke and Dean of the School of Professional Studies Dr. Bo Hannaford in painting crosswalks located by Alva Middle School and Longfellow Elementary School.
The City of Alva donated the paint and supplies to complete the project.
“Today’s event was a success because of our students volunteering their time and the City of Alva providing supplies,” Lemke said. “We appreciate everyone who pitched in. We hope to do another paint day within the next few weeks and are excited to continue giving back to Alva with a service project every semester. ”

Although this particular service project was mainly for students, Lemke said they hope to expand to community involvement as well.
Anyone interested in joining the next service project can contact Lemke by email at tmlemke@nwsou.edu or by phone at 580-327-8134.
