Northwestern students visit Truman Presidential Library and Museum

In connection with the Leviathan Society of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Social Sciences Department and Institute for Citizenship Studies, Dr. Aaron Mason, associate professor of political science, and Dr. Eric Schmaltz, associate professor of history, took three students to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Mo.

The group included Harold Henson, Alva sophomore; Jose Martinez, Woodward senior; and Tracy Detrixhe, Alva graduate student/university staff.

The group took a scheduled tour through the Truman Museum.

“Truman was our nation’s 33rd president from 1945-1953, guiding the country during the final months of World War II and the emerging Cold War with the Soviet Union,” Schmaltz said.

Afterwards, they visited the Truman family home that is located not far from the museum. 

In early fall 2009 Mason and Schmaltz established the Leviathan Society at Northwestern. This informal group in the Social Sciences Department encourages students interested in topics on government, politics and history to participate in campus sponsored activities and trips. It consists of students majoring in political science and history, though membership is open to students of all majors.
